My role as a Game Design Mentor

As a Game Design Mentor at CG Spectrum, I work with students to build their Design skill set each week in an effort to prepare them for an entry-level job in the Game Industry. Students start off learning basic concepts about the industry at large and how to think like a Game Designer before slowly transitioning through advanced concepts and working in a game engine of their choice.

I guide my students using my personal experience and background as an educational resource. Each week I meet with my class to critique their assignments, present a new design concept, and encourage them to explore their passion for Game Design by providing optional weekly challenges to accomplish.

Shaping the future of the program

Alongside acting as a Game Design Mentor I will be helping shape the course curriculum towards an Unreal 5 focus. I’ll utilize my 7+ years working in Unreal 5 to help build a program well suited for teaching students how to manipulate the engine to create the best content possible!

I’ll specifically be:

  • Working alongside other Game Design Mentors to develop an expansive Unreal 5 build filled with pre-built systems like wall running mechanics, inventories, playable AI, and much, much more!

  • Working with student TAs to establish Game Design Challenges on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Design Challenges offer extra opportunities for students to create high quality portfolio pieces while collaborating with each other.
